Representatives from the contracting company, Coastal Science and Engineering and the dredging company, Weeks Marine, will present an overview of the project followed by a question and answer session. Staff members from Dare County and the National Park Service will be in attendance to answer questions and review the “More Beach to Love” website that will be the go-to source for updated information about the project, once construction begins.

Construction of the Buxton Beach Nourishment project is scheduled to begin this summer and includes approximately 2.9 miles of beach from the “Haul Over” north of Buxton to the oceanfront groin near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Was the Lost Colony truly LOST?

It’s a question that continues to be debated and discussed by scholars, archaeologists, armchair historians and casual tourists alike.

Join The Croatoan Archaeological Society for an evening of enlightenment on the subject with Dr. Mark Horton of the University of Bristol, England on Thursday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hatteras Village Community Building/Library. Dr. Horton and his teams of archaeologists and students have been coming to Hatteras Island annually for a decade in an attempt to determine if some or all of the colonists could have resettled in this area.

The evening will include a lecture as well as the unveiling of the new CAS Artifacts display. You can follow the progress of this year’s dig on Facebook at Dig Hatteras or the Croatoan Archaeological Society. The March 31 program is free to the public. Hatteras Lighthouse Winter Climb 2015

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will be open for a special holiday tour for one weekend only. Join us for a FREE winter climb of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on Saturday, December 12, 2015 from 10 am to 2 pm.

Climbing the lighthouse is a unique experience, but a bit strenuous … equivalent to climbing a 12-story building … but it is worth the effort and the 360 degree view is nothing short of spectacular. After all, it is the nation’s tallest lighthouse and the tallest brick lighthouse in North America. That will certainly boost your bragging rights when you’ve completed your climbing adventure!

Children must be at least 42″ tall to climb the lighthouse and those under 12 must be escorted by a person at least 16 years old.

Not too many folks even know about this special event, because the facility is typically closed this time of year as noted on the park website, so only tell your very best friends!
