Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – Thursday October 26, 2017
Thursday October 26, 2017 10:45 a.m.
The hopper dredge R.N. Weeks returned to Buxton around 9 o’clock this morning and has begun pumping sand. Crews will continue working, moving to the south, as long as the weather and wave heights allow for safe operations.
Over the past week, the dredge completed 37 loads (compared to 22 loads the week before) and placed approximately 75,000 cubic yards of sand on the beach.
1,055,337 cubic yards of sand has been placed on the beach since the beginning of construction, which is about 40% of the total project volume. Weeks Marine plans to finish the southern portion of the project in front of Buxton, and then the dredge will move back to the landing site north of the village and complete the beach along the National Seashore.
The estimated date for the arrival of the new hopper dredge Magdalen, which has double capacity of R.N. Weeks, has been yet been determined.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – October 23, 2017
Monday, October 23, 2017
After working from the northern subline or landing site for several days last week, the hopper dredge R. N. Weeks connected to the subline near the village’s northern boundary on Saturday and has been pumping sand since approximately 6 p.m. Saturday evening.
With the approaching cold front due to bring high waves, the dredge will depart for Norfolk this evening and return later this week. When the dredge returns, Weeks Marine plans to continue working south through the village of Buxton to the southern project boundary before moving back to the northern portion of the project area to complete the full scope of work.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – October 18, 2017
Wednesday, October 18, 2017 5:30 p.m.
Weeks Marine reports that they were able to work efficiently for approximately 60 hours over the past week with the hopper dredge R.N. Weeks having pumped approximately 42,000 cubic yards of sand. 38% of the total project volume of sand has been pumped up to this point.
The dredge R.N. Weeks had to return to Norfolk on Monday due to rough sea conditions and is expected to return to the job site around 9 p.m. tonight to resume operations. The dredge will continue to use the northern landing site that is located about one mile north of Buxton. If weather allows, it will start using the southern landing site later this week and work to complete the beach in front of Buxton. After finishing the southern portion of the project, the dredge will go back to the northern landing site and complete the beach north of Buxton.
Weeks Marine has decided not to bring the cutterhead dredge C.R. McCaskill back to the job site due to increasing wave activities. Instead, a new hopper dredge Magdalen, with double capacity of R.N. Weeks, is planned to take over the workload of the R.N. Weeks to complete the project.

Christmas Tree Decorating Contest At Cape Hatteras Motel
Here’s your chance to win a five night stay at your favorite motel…the Cape Hatteras Motel, of course! Enter our Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. This is a great way for us to celebrate all of you during the holiday season when summer seems so far away, and a chance for you to plan your next vacation.
Here’s how it works. Send us a Christmas ornament that represents your hometown, your state, or favorite sports team. It should be something that identifies your geographic location. This will help us decorate our office tree — which looked a bit sparse last year — and will be a vivid reminder of where all our guests call home (and you do come from many places). When you send the ornament (and please don’t send anything breakable), include a small card with your name, e-mail address and cell phone number. We will draw one name from all the ornament entries received for a five night stay — no blackout dates and any room type (taxes not included – space must be available)! Second prize will be a shell basket with shells we’ve collected from our beach and Shelly Island.
One entry per household please. The ornaments must be received by November 15, 2017. They can be mailed to Cape Hatteras Motel, P.O. Box 339, Buxton, NC 27920. If you are visiting with us before November 15, you can bring the ornament to the office. Ornaments will not be returned. We will take photos of the ornaments as we receive them and the finished tree and we will post on Facebook, and of course we will let you know the name of our winners. The drawing will be held the day before Thanksgiving.
We have had a great year but also a challenging one. We want to say thank you to all of you who supported us through the trials and tribulations of storms, beach re-nourishment, and of course, the Great Power Outage of 2017.
We hope to have a tree full of ornaments from all over the country (and maybe even points beyond), and we wish you good luck in the drawing!
