More Beach To Love Re-Nourishment - Cape Hatteras Motel

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – October 11, 2017

The hopper dredge R.N. Weeks started pumping around 12:30 p.m. today from the second landing point or subline that is located approximately 1 mile north of Buxton. Pumping will proceed south to tie in with the section of beach that was completed by the cutterhead dredge C.R. McCaskill in August.

The cutterhead dredge C.R. McCaskill will arrive on site this afternoon and is expected to resume pumping sand tomorrow (Thursday). Work will proceed south from the first landing point or subline located at the north end of Buxton.

All plans are subject to change depending on sea conditions. The project map at www.MoreBeachToLove.com will be updated as construction zones change and work is completed.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – October 2, 2017

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update

October 2, 2016

Due to shoaling at Oregon Inlet, Weeks Marine was unable to move the tug boats and rubber hose to the job site last week. The arrival of the hopper dredge was delayed and the on-dredge inspection was cancelled. Turtle trawling was put on hold, and all other equipment as well as the crew are once again on standby. Based on the weather and marine forecast, the next fair weather window may open up next week.

Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – September 28, 2017

Date: 09/28/2017 11:01 a.m.
Today, Weeks Marine construction crew members will begin returning to the job site and if conditions allow, pre-dredging data collection will begin.

On Friday, crews will begin moving equipment to the construction area on the beach during periods of low tide.

The hopper dredge R. N. Weeks is scheduled to arrive over the weekend and the goal is for this dredge to begin pumping sand as soon as all pre-dredging requirements are completed, including 48 hours of non-capture sea turtle trawling and inspection of the dredge in cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers. The hopper dredge R.N. Weeks will connect to the landing point located approximately 5,000 feet north of the first landing point, and pumping will proceed south to tie in with the section of beach that was already completed by the cutterhead dredge C.R. McCaskill.

The return date of the cutterhead dredge C.R. McCaskill will be determined once the weather pattern is more defined. Once on site, the McCaskill will resume work at the north end of the village.

All plans are subject to change depending on sea conditions.

Tropical Storm Maria Reentry - Cape Hatteras Motel

Reentry From T.S. Maria Announced For Hatteras Island

Unrestricted Access to Hatteras Island Begins at 1:00 p.m. Today [9/28/17].

On Thursday afternoon, visitors may return to all Hatteras Island villages including Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village.

There are still pockets of sand and water remaining along Highway 12 and on some side roads. It will be necessary for NCDOT to maintain traffic control points along portions of Highway 12 to enable crews to continue working to clear roads. This will limit traffic to one lane in some areas. Expect delays and proceed with extreme caution.

All travelers must realize that the water on roadways contains salt and may cause damage to vehicles. A state of emergency remains in effect and includes motor vehicle speed restrictions on flooded roads.

Dangerous surf and rip currents will remain in the area through the weekend. Stay out of the ocean – conditions are unsafe for even the most experienced swimmers. For updated forecasts from the National Weather Service, visit www.weather.gov/mhx.
