Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – February 28, 2018

Weeks Marine pumped the final load of sand at the northern end of the nourishment project on Tuesday afternoon, February 27. All 2.6 million cubic yards of sand have now been placed along the stretch of beach that runs 2.9 miles from the “haulover” north of Buxton to the oceanfront groin at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Over the next two weeks, the new sand will be graded and all equipment removed. The updated project map shows the small area of beach that will remain closed during demobilization.

Updates regarding sand fencing and sprigging will be forthcoming, as additional information is available.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – Thursday, December 14, 2017

Thursday, December 14, 2017

According to Weeks Marine, if the weather forecast is accurate for the next 3 days, the project area in front of the village of Buxton (including the taper section in front of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore) will be completed by Saturday, December 16.

The dredge R.N. Weeks is scheduled to go to Norfolk, VA for fuel and regular maintenance on Sunday, December 17. While the dredge is gone, the newly nourished beaches will be graded to the design elevation. If all plans are executed as planned, the beach along the village of Buxton is expected to be fully open to the public early next week.

After finishing nourishment along the south section of the project, the construction zone will be relocated north of the village of Buxton and pumping will proceed north.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update Thursday November 30, 2017

Thursday, November 30, 2017

The hopper dredge R.N. Weeks was able to operate about 75% of the time over the past week and completed 52 loads. Weeks Marine reports that almost $1.4 million cubic yards of sand has been placed on the beach or about 53% of the project total. The completed section of beach is expected to open to the public by the end of the week.

Construction continues to proceed south and Weeks Marine estimates that it will take 21 work days to complete the south section of the project. If the weather forecast holds, Weeks Marine expects to work most of the time over the next few days.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update Thursday November 16, 2017

Thursday, November 16, 2017

The hopper dredge R.N. Weeks remained in safe harbor in Jacksonville, Florida over the past week. The repairs on the dredge have been completed, and the dredge was scheduled to be put back in the water and have the US Coast Guard inspection yesterday (November 15). If everything goes as planned, the dredge will leave Jacksonville today (November 16) and is expected to arrive in Buxton Saturday evening or Sunday morning. The weather forecast shows workable conditions from Sunday to Wednesday of next week. If this forecast holds true, the dredge will resume pumping shortly after its return to the jobsite.

Before operations were shut down last Monday, Weeks Marine reported that ~1,222,575 cubic yards of sand has been placed on the beach. This volume is equivalent to ~47% of the project total (2,600,000 cubic yards). Once the dredge is back in Buxton, work will resume approximately 700 feet south of the first building in Buxton and proceed south until it reaches the southern boundary of the project.

Weeks Marine reports that sea trials of the larger hopper dredge Magdalen have been progressing smoothly and their engineering team is working on the pre-dredging drawings and documents that will be submitted to the Corps of Engineers. An estimated date for arrival of the larger dredge will be announced once the timeframe is established.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update Tuesday November 7, 2017

Staff from Coastal Science Engineers presented an update regarding the Buxton beach nourishment project at the November 6 Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting. A .pdf of the presentation can be viewed by clicking here. Due to an upcoming weather event and industrial equipment issues, Weeks Marine pulled the dredge to Jacksonville Monday afternoon for mechanical repairs and to refuel. The dredge will return once weather conditions improve and repairs and refueling are complete. To date 46% of the project is completed. Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – Thursday October 26, 2017

Thursday October 26, 2017 10:45 a.m.

The hopper dredge R.N. Weeks returned to Buxton around 9 o’clock this morning and has begun pumping sand. Crews will continue working, moving to the south, as long as the weather and wave heights allow for safe operations.

Over the past week, the dredge completed 37 loads (compared to 22 loads the week before) and placed approximately 75,000 cubic yards of sand on the beach.

1,055,337 cubic yards of sand has been placed on the beach since the beginning of construction, which is about 40% of the total project volume. Weeks Marine plans to finish the southern portion of the project in front of Buxton, and then the dredge will move back to the landing site north of the village and complete the beach along the National Seashore.

The estimated date for the arrival of the new hopper dredge Magdalen, which has double capacity of R.N. Weeks, has been yet been determined.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – October 23, 2017

Monday, October 23, 2017

After working from the northern subline or landing site for several days last week, the hopper dredge R. N. Weeks connected to the subline near the village’s northern boundary on Saturday and has been pumping sand since approximately 6 p.m. Saturday evening.

With the approaching cold front due to bring high waves, the dredge will depart for Norfolk this evening and return later this week.  When the dredge returns, Weeks Marine plans to continue working south through the village of Buxton to the southern project boundary before moving back to the northern portion of the project area to complete the full scope of work.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – October 18, 2017

Wednesday, October 18, 2017 5:30 p.m.

Weeks Marine reports that they were able to work efficiently for approximately 60 hours over the past week with the hopper dredge R.N. Weeks having pumped approximately 42,000 cubic yards of sand. 38% of the total project volume of sand has been pumped up to this point.

The dredge R.N. Weeks had to return to Norfolk on Monday due to rough sea conditions and is expected to return to the job site around 9 p.m. tonight to resume operations. The dredge will continue to use the northern landing site that is located about one mile north of Buxton. If weather allows, it will start using the southern landing site later this week and work to complete the beach in front of Buxton. After finishing the southern portion of the project, the dredge will go back to the northern landing site and complete the beach north of Buxton.

Weeks Marine has decided not to bring the cutterhead dredge C.R. McCaskill back to the job site due to increasing wave activities. Instead, a new hopper dredge Magdalen, with double capacity of R.N. Weeks, is planned to take over the workload of the R.N. Weeks to complete the project.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update – October 11, 2017

The hopper dredge R.N. Weeks started pumping around 12:30 p.m. today from the second landing point or subline that is located approximately 1 mile north of Buxton. Pumping will proceed south to tie in with the section of beach that was completed by the cutterhead dredge C.R. McCaskill in August.

The cutterhead dredge C.R. McCaskill will arrive on site this afternoon and is expected to resume pumping sand tomorrow (Thursday). Work will proceed south from the first landing point or subline located at the north end of Buxton.

All plans are subject to change depending on sea conditions. The project map at www.MoreBeachToLove.com will be updated as construction zones change and work is completed.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update

October 2, 2016

Due to shoaling at Oregon Inlet, Weeks Marine was unable to move the tug boats and rubber hose to the job site last week. The arrival of the hopper dredge was delayed and the on-dredge inspection was cancelled. Turtle trawling was put on hold, and all other equipment as well as the crew are once again on standby. Based on the weather and marine forecast, the next fair weather window may open up next week.

Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
